Impotent Teeth

I decided to do some research on dental hygiene because I had one of those dreams where my teeth fell out.  Here are some theories about teeth-falling-out dreams:

  • Because you remember the tooth fairy, a dream of teeth falling out means that you will be receiving money.
  • Dreaming of loose teeth indicates that a family member or close friend is very sick or even near death.
  • Because teeth are such an important part of flirtation, dreaming of teeth falling out may reflect an ongoing problem with impotence.  Or you may simply believe that you are an unattractive person.
  • Teeth represent power.  If you dream of losing teeth, you may need to be more aggressive and more confident about your opinion.

Um… yeah… all of the above.

During my research, I came across this article on WebMD.  It might as well argue that morning breath is a sign of tongue cancer!  Song about oral hygiene coming soon.

  • After reading all of these comments, I feel the burning need to share my teeth falling out dream too. Or more crumbling out. It begins with pieces falling out, and then I keep on feeling these bits of them tumbling around my mouth. I reach in to remove them, and one by one pull out pieces of a broken teacup.

Corey replies: I had a dream once where I had insect eggs inside my mouth. I thought they were loose teeth, but when I reached in and pulled one out, it was a full-grown butterfly.

  • Wow – I’m so happy you’re going to write a song about teeth! I have to admit I used to have a little bit of a tooth fetish. My first boyfriend was an orthodontist’s son. His teeth were so perfect! And I’ve been thinking about it and it probably all started after a dream I had about my teeth falling out. In the dream I was on stage and my teeth started falling out one by one. They hit the stage and started bouncing up and down each hitting piano notes when they hit the stage. It was really beautiful so I started smiling but I realized I didn’t have any teeth so I quickly closed my mouth! My sister is a therapist and I asked her what her thoughts were about teeth dreams. Similar to what you said above, she said that if you dream about losing your teeth it represents a loss of power in your life. Can’t wait to hear your song about teeth!

Corey replies: Wow. The music your teeth made — what did it sound like?

  • please, please call the song “impotent teeth”. please.
I have a reoccurring dream where my teeth crumble in my mouth. these dreams are very graphic, and sort of gross. theories?

Corey replies: You keep it to yourself, but you want there to be more glamorous photos of you floating around in the public sphere, while you are still young and beautiful!

  • I really really really hate those dreams. I’ve only had them in times of deep distress, like graduate school.

I LOVE this project! It is close to my heart, as many of my friends will tell you.

Corey replies: Thanks, JoJo. I think it’s time to put on the CD, “Relax to Sleep.”

  • my front teeth are porcelain. I cannot comment on this topic.

Corey replies: You are 100% porcelain, baby!

  • Maybe I’m worried that I’m too potent?

Corey replies: I agree that dreams are not meant to be interpreted so unequivocally in comparison to waking life. But it’s fun to try! Maybe your teeth getting stuck together dream means that you’re “performing” too much (social performance and/or concert performance?) and not saying what you mean or meaning what you say. This is fun, no?

  • I’m not 100% convinced that dreams have such clear one-to-one correspondences with waking life, but what does it mean if I’ve never had a teeth falling out dream but often dream about my teeth getting stuck together or not being able to close properly?

  • i always hear losing your teeth in a dream was about loss of control. for what its worth i had those dreams till I got a mouth guard. changed my life.

Corey replies: Hi Mallory. I don’t have the tooth dreams all that often, but I’ll keep the mouth guard in mind.

  • i was once in a writing for performance workshop and we were asked to draw pictures of our dreams. almost everyone in the group drew themselves losing their teeth. a lot of people have told me that it means they are economically unstable. or something.

Corey replies: Yes, apparently that’s because of the tooth fairy! But there’s also a more grown-up analogy to running out of money and running out of teeth. Either way, your choice of what to eat is drastically limited.

  • My friend said that her mother was dreaming about her teeth falling out. Someone else commented that tooth-falling-out dreams are related to impotence (as you say). I suggested that perhaps, instead of her mother being concerned about the impotence of her husband (not something my friend wanted to consider, anyway), she was actually concerned about the “impotence” of my friend’s partner – not really his “impotence”, but rather his “inability” to get her pregnant, an “inability” that was actually a “conscious, mutual decision.” The interesting thing is, if this is the right diagnosis, then teeth are a stand-in for reproduction, more generally, not just one’s own, but that of one’s children, or perhaps beyond.

Corey replies: Perhaps if I spent less time brushing my teeth and more time brushing up on my Jüng, I would understand my dreams more clearly. I suppose it makes sense that while writing a piece about fretting illness, both worries about impotence and worries about reproduction are simmering in my mind. I think the best thing would be to combine the “impotence” interpretation with this interpretation: Teeth represent power. If you dream of losing teeth, you may need to be more aggressive and more confident… That way, the solution would be to prance about declaring: “I am extremely confident of my impotence!”
